TOKYO – More than 135,000 UK-made Toyota Avensis models and more than 10,000 Lexus models sold in Europe are part of the Japanese's automaker's 1.7 million-car recall to fix a variety of fuel system related problems.

Toyota Motor Corp., still struggling to restore a badly damaged reputation for top quality, announced two separate global recalls Wednesday.

The bigger of the two covers 1.34 million vehicles including 135,041 in Europe, mostly the Avensis mid-sized sedan and wagon manufactured at the automaker's plant in Burnaston, England. This recall is to fix a faulty fuel pump and connecting pipe.

A design flaw in those vehicles means that fuel pipes may develop cracks and leak. Some of the vehicles also have faulty check valves meant to prevent the reverse flow of fuel.

The other recall the company announced Wednesday is to fix a fuel pressure sensor and affects 354,524 cars worldwide including 10,158 in Europe, mostly the Lexus IS and GS sedans.

Most of the Lexus models hit by the recall are in North America, where 245,000 IS and GS sedans will be called back for service. In cases where the sensor is not fastened tightly enough, fuel can leak between the gasket that connects the sensor to the fuel delivery pipes, Toyota said.

The action affects the following vehicles in the United States: 2006-2007 model year Lexus GS300/350; 2006-early 2009 Lexus IS250; and 2006-early 2008 Lexus IS350. The recall also affects the Toyota Crown and Mark X sedans sold in Japan.

Including the latest actions, Toyota has recalled 18 million vehicles since November 2009.
